Before the Bell Rings: Key Info Families Need Before Summer Break

The countdown is on! Students are buzzing, teachers are juggling finals and farewells, and families are trying to figure out what happens next. Before everyone sprints toward summer, there’s a narrow but critical window. This is your chance to share the information families actually need. We’re talking about clear, timely, parent-first communication. Trust us—a little bit of clarity right now means fewer questions later.

1. Think beyond the basics

Yes, families need to know when the last day of school is. They need lunch account balances, lost-and-found updates, and device return details, but that’s not all they care about. They also want to know:

  • What happens if their child needs academic support over summer?
  • Are there changes to busing or pickup for the final week?
  • What will school look like in the fall—and when should they expect more info?

When we think like families—not just as communicators—we anticipate the real questions. We skip the jargon and explain the “why.”

2. Avoid the one-and-done message

If the goal is peace of mind, repetition is your friend. Reminders on multiple channels—text, email, robocalls, social media—help ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Some families skim. Some read everything. Most need to see something more than once before it sticks.

So, don’t be afraid to say it again, but make sure that you’re saying it well. Vary your tone. Use bullet points and add visuals. If you’re feeling creative, embed a 60-second video from the principal. If it helps people understand, the effort is well worth it.

3. Keep it human

There’s an art to sounding informative without sounding robotic. “Please be advised that school will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. on May 30” is technically correct. But, “School lets out early on May 30—12:30 p.m. sharp! Plan ahead for pickup.” That sounds like someone real wrote it. Someone who gets that calendars are already full and inboxes are overflowing. When your communication sounds real, you build trust and you also strengthen recall.

Now is your chance to end well

The way communication ends the school year is so important. Families are forming their final impressions. They’re evaluating if their school experience felt supported or scattered. Clear, calm, proactive updates help make that decision easy.

Plus, when families leave the year feeling informed and appreciated, they’re more likely to re-engage when back-to-school season rolls around. So, before the bell rings, make it count. Say what needs to be said—clearly, kindly, and more than once. Your audience will notice—and they will appreciate the difference.
