The Opportunity

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District sought to address a growing concern with chronic absenteeism among students. Leadership recognized that improving attendance required not only monitoring data, but also actively engaging students, families, and staff with clear, consistent messaging. The district brought in our team to develop a comprehensive communication campaign that would raise awareness, educate the community, and encourage positive attendance habits.

Our Solution

Our team designed and executed a district-wide communication campaign targeting parents, staff, and students. We collaborated closely with district leaders to ensure messaging aligned with their goals and priorities. The campaign included:

  • Eye-catching posters and brochures displayed throughout school facilities
  • Custom social media graphics and posts to reach families digitally
  • A dedicated webpage providing resources and information
  • Personalized letters to families emphasizing the importance of consistent attendance
  • Newsletter articles to reinforce messaging across multiple touchpoints

By leveraging a multichannel approach, we were able to make sure all members of the community received consistent, accessible information in engaging, actionable formats.

The Results

Since the launch of the campaign, PVPUSD has seen measurable improvements in student attendance, demonstrating that families and students were motivated to prioritize regular school attendance.

The Data Showed
A nearly 3 percentage-point decrease in chronically absent students—a 23.4% reduction in chronically absent students from the prior year!

The Impact

"This year, we reduced the percentage of students who are deemed chronically absent from 12.4% in 2023-24 to 9.5% in 2024-25. This success is largely due to our attendance campaign and the support of the Donovan Group."
